Sutelizas/Niceties

$1,000.00

Original acrylic on canvas (24”W x 24”H x 1”D).

I come from a long line of polite, well-mannered (and strong-willed!) Mexican women. Sutilezas, or everyday niceties, in spanish were ingrained in my vocabulary since birth and still live in my headspace: “Claro, que si”, “No te preocupes”, “Que se te ofrece?”, “Míl Gracias”, “No hay de que”. The warm and generous spirit they offer is one of many things I love about being Mexican, but at times they don’t translate. For ex, “a thousand thanks” is over the top in English, though I do feel super grateful.
